Watch Your Car Files: Tudor Heritage

June 24,2010

Tudor has always had the blessing—and the curse—to be a sister brand to the more renowned Rolex. In our minds, they are to Rolex as Bentley was to Rolls Royce. The association gives them a certain level of class, but also leaves them in the shadow of the more famous brand.

Just as Bentley is now free to carve out its own identity, Tudor is now releasing this interesting timepiece which has invigorated interest in the brand. Blatantly called the Heritage Chrono, the watch features a design emulating its famous Oysterdate chronograph from the 1970s.

The distinctive dial (gray on black or black on gray) is highly reminiscent of automotive gauges, particularly the neat orange second hand. The design was apparently inspired by Porsche’s Le Mans race cars. Other details include a biredirectional rotatable bezel, bevelled and polished edges of the lugs, stylized shoulders to protect the crown, and the knurled edge of the rotatable bezel and of the pushers that flank a knurled winding crown to improve grip. The watch is available with a solid steel bracelet or a very cool fabric strap with seat-belt inspired buckle.

The 42-mm Tudor Heritage Chrono is powered by a Valjoux movement.
