Remember MG-Rover? The British car manufacturer, which at one time was owned by Honda and then by BMW, was sold to China car manufacturer Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation (SAIC). Based on the Rover 500, a chassis-mate of the Honda Accord, the SAIC produced the Roewe 550, a reportedly decent and arguably the first desirable Chinese-branded car.
SAIC also took custody of the MG brand name, so now the 550’s successor is known as the MG6. The new car took a bow at the Guangzhou Auto Show. With a new front end and buttlifted rear, the MG6 will pack a 1.8-liter engine. Chinese customers, like the Americans and Filipinos, like their cars with trunks.
Also on hand was the MG3, a Fiesta/Mazda2 rival that carries a 1.5-liter gasoline engine, with 107 bhp and up to 155 bhp in turbo guise.
