Ford USA Launches 2011 Explorer

July 28,2010

Ford Motor Company has launched the 2011 Ford Explorer. The revitalized American company is taking its venerable bestseller in a new direction. The Explorer features a turbocharged inline-four as the base engine, decidedly modern styling, and most significantly—unibody construction.

Improvement of fuel efficiency was a key goal for the 2011 Explorer, achieved mainly with the weight savings from the monocoque construction and the turbo engine combined with a six-speed automatic. The new engine is targeting an output of 237 hp and a whopping 339Nm from just 1700 rpm. The engine features direct gasoline injection. The Explorer includes a Terrain Response System pinched from erstwhile Ford division Land Rover. To adjust to different offroad conditions, the selects via a dash-mounted knob, and the car adjusts its brakes, suspension, and traction control.

The Explorer retains three rows of seating. Standard features include stability control, curtain airbags, tilt-telescoping steering, and a “media hub” entertainment system. Another significant first for this vehicle is that it was the first to be launched online—on Facebook.
