Heidfeld leaves Mercedes GP to test for Pirelli

August 18,2010

Which is worse: going from F1 race driver to F1 test driver, or going from F1 racing team test driver to F1 tire manufacturer test driver? Nick Heidfeld is about to find out, as he has been “released from his contract” with Mercedes GP to join Pirelli as test driver. The Italian tire manufacturer is preparing for its return to F1 in 2011. It will be the sole supplier of tires for three years.

Some words of solace from Norbert Haug: “It was clear from the beginning of our cooperation that Mercedes GP would release Nick from his obligations as soon as a promising opportunity as an active Formula One driver developed. This is now the case and there could be no more experienced and knowledgeable driver in the cockpit to
steer the tire development for next season.”

Much as we hate to admit it, the Mercedes team would probably have been better off with Heidfeld in the car alongside Nico Rosberg. We hope Heidfeld finds his way to a race seat next season.
