After introducing a world-class compact in the Cruze, Chevrolet seems ready to apply the same techniques of heightened style and solid engineering to its A-segment hatchback, the new Spark.
Chevrolet deliberately disavows the cute styling theme of the previous version, aiming for a look that’s “more aggressive and edgy rather than perky and sweet.” We think that they have aced the styling. Oversized headlamps flank the new corporate Chevy grille. Pronounced fender flares lend a bit of sportiness. Notable styling features include hidden rear door handles and a tight gap between front and rear doors, giving the illusion that the Spark is a three-door.
Inside, the most interesting feature is the motorcycle-style instrument panel, mounted on top of the steering column. “Ice blue” LED backlighting lends a bit of high-tech atmosphere. Convenience features include power windows and door locks, 60/40 split-folding rear seat, and aux input for the audio system.
Spark will be powered by either of two engines: a 1.0-liter with 68 bhp, good for a 0-100 km/h time of 15.5 seconds, and a 1.2 liter with 81 hp, good for a 12.1-second time, and 164 km/h top speed. Promised fuel economy is 19 km/liter.
The chassis uses MacPherson Struts up front with a beam axle at the rear. Safety features include ABS with EBD and dual front airbags. The Spark was first seen in the execrable Transformers 2 movie, and is set for a larger role when the next, probably worse sequel arrives. Take that, Chery QQ!
