Audi Robots invade Trafalgar Square

August 25,2010

Talk about Vorsprunging its Technik: if you happen to be in London from 16 to 23 September, you will want to check out Trafalgar Square, where Audi will install eight of its large production scale robots. Visitors can take control of the robots and use them to write holographic messages. The robot’s light heads trace letters in the air, the light trace is recorded, encoded and relayed back for viewing and sharing. The “popup factory” shades-of-modern-art installation is called “Outrace.”

Audi is calling the robots “mighty ambassadors from a foreign land that produces the goods we use and the cars we drive.” Das ist wunderbar, ja?

Not going to London? You can still send “large scale three dimensional light messages” via www.outrace.org

The powerful light heads attached to the synchronized mechanical arms make use of LED technology from the Audi R15 TDI race car, winner of this year’s 24h of LeMans. The heads trace letters in the air with spectacular precision and elegant determination. As a user’s message is drawn, the light trace is simultaneously recorded through a system of high definition, long-exposure cameras, encoded as a video and relayed back to be shared across (what else?) social media.
