Ford updates Mondeo Sedan and Wagon

August 27,2010

Quick—what was the new James Bond’s first car onscreen? Before Daniel Craig won that Aston Martin in a card game, he was driving a Ford Mondeo. Apparently, even Bond’s rental has to look classy.

Now, four years and no-upcoming-Bond-movie later, Ford is about to launch the restyled Mondeo, complete with new electronic features and innovative engine choices.

The family resemblance to the current Ford Focus is uncanny. A new feature is the Active Grille Shutter system, which can shut and open various openings in the grille to improve aerodynamics and engine warm-up. Who says F1 technology doesn’t translate to road cars eh?

Electronic aids that just a few months ago were reserved for the likes of the BMW 7 Series, such as lane departure warning and auto high beam will be available on Mondeo.

The best part is under the hood: Ford is plopping in a new version of 2.0-liter EcoBoost gasoline engine. The turbocharged powerplant is now good for 238 bhp, while the 2.2-liter TDCi diesel is no slouch, with 196 bhp.

We surmise that a well-specced Mondeo can give Car of the Year Subaru Legacy sedan and wagon a run for its money.
