Passat vs Darth Vader: VW’s Superbowl ads

February 06,2011

Volkswagen is betting a lot on its new Passat mid-size sedan. Styled and designed for North America, it will take on the Honda Accord, Toyota Camry, and Hyundai Sonata in a very competitive market. Part of VW’s bet is an all-new factory in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

The car features an extended wheelbase (by 91mm) vs its European cousin, and in length and width as well. It will have such goodies as insulating acoustic film on the windshield, ABS, tire pressure monitor, and ESP.

Engine choices will be a 2.5-liter gasoline inline-five, which delivers 168 bhp and which should make have an interesting soundtrack; a 3.6-liter V6 with 277 bhp/350 Nm; and a 2.0 “clean diesel” TDI good for all 50 U.S. states. Transmission choices are all six speed: manual, torque-converter auto, or dual-clutch, depending on the engine type.

The Passat will be promoted via an ad on the Superbowl. The ad features the car, a mini-Darth Vader, and John Williams’ iconic theme. It has just gone viral, attracting more than a million views. Check it out and a teaser ad for the upcoming New Beetle here (Thanks to Lesley for the tip):
