The Bugatti Veyron is famous for being the world’s fastest production car. Now it has strengthened that reputation by achieving a new landspeed world record for production cars. The orange and black Veyron 16.4 Super Sport piloted by chief test driver Pierre Henri Raphanel achieved an average top speed of 431 km/h.
Officials of the German Technical Inspection Agency (TÜV) and a representative of Guinness Book of Records certified the result, a run at the Volkswagen Proving Grounds near Wolfsburg. Bugatti engineers were targeting a mere 425 km/h, but perfect track conditions allowed for that extra bit of top speed.
The Super Sport is a special edition of the Veyron. The 16-cylinder engine is equipped with larger-than-standard quad turbos to push the output to 1200bhp and 1500Nm. The top speed is normally limited to 415km/h to “protect the tires.” The first five production Super Sports will be an even more exclusive subset, with the same configuration as the landspeed record car, including the exposed carbon and orange finish.
Killer feature: 1200 bhp / 1500 Nm engine
Cool touch: Exposed carbon and orange paint scheme.
Why we can’t have it: All five Super Sport landspeed editions have been sold.
