Chicago Auto Show 2011: Chevy Camaro joins 500 hp club

February 14,2011

The Chevrolet Camaro has been a target for tuners ever since it debuted, and now Chevy has released its own superpowered version. The 2012 Camaro ZL1 was revealed at the Chicago Auto Show, with a supercharged V8 engine good for 550 bhp. It will be the fastest Camaro offered by Chevy (at least for now).

The ZL1 name harks back to an aluminum racing engine series produced in the 1960s. The new all-aluminum small-block (small is 6.2 liters) V8 will be supercharged for 550 bhp and 667 Nm of output. Power will be channeled through a Tremec six-speed manual, with a twin-disc clutch capable of course of coping with the colossal torque.

This car won’t perform solely in drag racing, as Chevy has promised track-ready handling including the company’s Magnetic Ride Control, adopted by among others, Ferrari.
All of the Camaro exterior colors will be offered with the ZL1, but black is the only interior color. It won’t lack for creature comforts, either, with heated and motorized front seats, Boston Acoustics audio, and rear camera system.

Camaro ZL1 will be one of the meanest-looking Camaros, with a new front fascia and hood with air extractors. There’s a carbon-fiber center section in the hood and 20-inch wheels with 285/35 tires up front and 305/35 in the rear. A dual-mode exhaust will maintain some civility during low rpm, with a raucous version once unleashed.
