Bentley Continental Supersports goes 330 km/h on ice

article-image-826It’s a given that man will set every conceivable record for the sake of achievement, and as winter roars away in parts of Europe, Bentley has set a new speed record for driving on ice: 330 km/h by the Continental Supersports convertible. Behind the wheel is of course a Finn, four-time world rally champion Juha Kankkunen.

The Bentley’s 6.0-liter W12 was powered by biofuel, to give some sort of environmental mitigation to the event. The car was equipped with a roll cage and a parachute for braking, but was otherwise stock.

The drive was on the “hazardous” frozen waters of the Baltic Sea, off the coast of Finland. The “track” was 16.5km long, on a 70-cm thick layer of sea ice.

The record attempt was driven on a 1000m long measured distance with the speed certified by officials from the Finland Traffic Police. His new world record was based on the average of two runs in opposite directions with measured speeds ratified by a representative of The Guinness Book of Records.

Here’s another piece of evidence, for your entertainment:
