Pirelli modifies F1 tires for Hungarian GP

By William Herrera July 16,2013

The 2013 Formula 1 TM Santander  British Grand Prix saw the most number of tire failures in recent memory, thus, F1 tire supplier Pirelli, have made modifications on the tires they will provide the teams come the Hungarian GP in a two weeks time.

They have announced that Soft and Medium compound tires, reinforced with a Kevlar belt, will be made available, contrary to their earlier decision to go for the Hard and Medium compound.

Lotus would be pleased with the developments as they are much opposed to be using the Harder compound tires. Their car set-up maximizes tire life better than anyone in the 2013 grid.

The new tires will be identical to the 2012 spec tire in terms of structure, construction and belt, which ensured maximum performance and safety. The 2013 compounds will still be used, guaranteeing faster times and longer running life.

Pirelli’s motorsport director, Paul Hembery commented “I think you will see this sort of combination again. I think it is quite right we are going to Hungary with the soft and the medium.

“I think with the soft and the super soft you would have ended up with everyone four stopping and struggling, whereas the contrast was good in Germany and I think you will see something similar in Hungary.”

With the possible exception of Mercedes, the new spec tires will be tested on-track by all the teams at Silverstone on July 17-19 during the young driver tests. The tests would provide the much needed data on the range and life span of each compound, enabling teams to maximise car set-up and provide fans with an exciting remainder to the season.
