Don’t rub your eyes when you see the Virgin Racing team’s livery this coming March; the new team is now called Marussia Virgin Racing, after the eponymous Russian supercar maker. What is Marussia?
As the name suggests, Marussia is a Russian maker of supercars. Founded in 2007 by Nikolay Fomenko, the company soon surprised with the launch of its first car barely a year later. The B1 is a limited-production car (2999 units) built on a space-frame steel tube chassis and powered by a Cosworth 3.5-liter V6 with 420 bhp. When propelling the car’s 1100-kg curb weight, the result is 0-100 km/h acceleration in 3.2 seconds. Tires are 245/35 front and 285/35 rear on 20-inch wheels.
That’s just part of the story. As Marussia puts it, their cars are “the unique fusion of technical perfection and flash catchy design.” The cars are bespoke, allowing the owner to “order the interior elements trimming with the help of any accessible on the planet of Earth materials, or…able to change the vehicle exterior by means of the carbon trimming.” The cars have no external rear-view mirrors. Instead, three monitors on the dashboard display the vehicle surroundings. There’s also a record feature, thus allowing you to save your shenanigans for that YouTube video.
After the conclusion of this year’s F1 season, the company took a majority stake in Virgin Racing, which will henceforth be Marussia Virgin Racing. With the rising number of billionaires in Russia, the company should be able to able sell out its production. If you happen to acquire one of these for your collection, remember: Think In Russian!
