Subaru Teases All-New Impreza Hatch with XV Concept

April 19,2011

A mere days before the official unveil of the all-new Subaru Impreza sedan and hatchback at the 2011 New York International Auto Show, Fuji Heavy Industries has taken the wraps off a lightly disguised model dubbed the XV Concept.

Subaru fans should note that the XV moniker is currently being used by the car maker in the form of a raised Impreza hatchback. It’s designed to slot below the Forester as an entry-level crossover vehicle. Yanks should know it better as the Impreza Outback or the Outback Sport (depending on the model year).

The all-new 2012 model boasts of a new design lingo for Subaru termed: Protren. It’s an amalgam of the words “Professional Tool” and “Trendy Design”. Of course, whether the all-new Impreza hits the right notes with those phrases is something we’ll leave to you.

The XV Concept features a front end that’s very reminiscent of the current-gen Legacy. The black cladding you see on the concept is actually not plastic but are black metallic highlights.

Inside, the XV Concept carries the Legacy’s familiar cockpit design down to the steering wheel. Of course, expect the touch-screen interface to drop out of the production model.

Under the hood is Subaru’s all-new 2.0-liter Flat-4 engine mated to a CVT transmission. The wheelbase has grown to 2,635 mm while maintaining an overall length 4,450 mm–close to those of the current Impreza.
