Hyundai’s new Veloster: a four-door hatchback

January 06,2011

Following the critical success of its Genesis Coupe, Hyundai wants to expand its sports-car lineup with a more affordable vehicle. Thus, the upcoming Veloster (Hyundai really likes thumbing its nose at Porsche, doesn’t it?). The new car is, in a surprise twist, a four door—a hatchback, one door on the driver side, and two on the passenger side. The double doors on the passenger side, which open conventionally and not in front/rear hinged configuration, as in the Mazda RX-8, are to make passenger ingress and egress easier. That logic will certainly appeal to Mr. Spock, although Scotty may complain about the ruined design symmetry.

Early reports peg the Veloster as riding on a modified Genesis Coupe platform, which should make it very interesting indeed. Watch out for its official debut next week at the North American International Auto Show.
