Since it will be quite a while before the next James Bond movie, fans will have to content themselves with reading the latest Bond adventure: in book form. We picked up a copy of Jeffery Deaver’s Carte Blanche from Powerbooks last week.
As expected, the opening chapters alone are rife with product placements: Oakley sunglasses, iPhones, and Rolex watches are named quite specifically. Then there’s the topic of Bond’s personal vehicle, already revealed some months ago. Just as Bond goes back to his original preference with Rolex, so has he reverted to his supposedly first love in the novels, a Bentley.
The Bentley that 007 is driving is a Continental GT with a W12 engine, described as being in the company’s trademark slate gray exterior, with interior done up in black hide. Now the story also discloses that Bond’s flat includes a garage with two cars: the other is his leisure vehicle. We would have bet our trigger finger that this would be an Aston Martin, but as it turns out, it is a Jaguar E-type, inherited from his father, no less.
The watch community is excited by Bond’s return to Rolex, a rather understated 34-mm model at that, and the Bentley is consistent with that image.
Will the new Bond pairing continue in the movies? Aston Martin is no longer part of the Ford conglomerate, while Bentley seems quite enthusiastic in promoting its James Bond association in the new novel. So we might see Bond back in a German car, after all.
