Mazda has announced that they will produce a pure-electric version of the Demio (our Mazda2) subcompact. The company promises a range of 200 km. The car will run on lithium-ion batteries; few other details were available.
The car is part of the company’s Building Block Strategy, which means Mazda will improve its base technologies such as more efficient gasoline engines and transmissions, and reduction of vehicle weight. The new tech will be sold under the Skyactiv brand name. Mazda promises efficiency similar to a hybrid car’s, without the added cost and complexity.
So when can you buy an electric Mazda2/Demio? Unfortunately, that remains to be seen, as Mazda will first offer the car for lease to government and fleet customers.
