S Car Go, Part 1: Mini Cooper S goes diesel

February 05,2011

The “S” high-performance badge favored by European premium brands has been recently going the diesel route. First was the Jaguar XF Diesel S, and now it’s Mini’s turn. The Mini Cooper will come in an SD version for all of the body styles, including the Clubman and Countryman.

Mini Cooper SD will carry a turbodiesel with 143 bhp and 305 Nm. Power has been bumped up by nearly 60 percent from the standard One D diesel model. The 2.0-liter displacement means that it will be the largest engine ever fitted to a production Mini. Fittingly, it also cranks out the highest torque of any Mini engine, including the John Cooper Works engines. In the hatchback, 0-100 km/h zips by in 8.1 seconds, and top speed is 214 km/h. With Auto Start/Stop technology, Mini quotes a mileage figure of nearly 23 km/liter. Mini owners may soon be able to queue up in the PUJ lane of local gas stations.
