Back to back for Marquez: History was made at the Red Bull US GP in Laguna Seca

By William Herrera July 22,2013

Marc Marquez, the 20 year old Spaniard, started the 2013 Red Bull USGP at second place on board his Repsol Honda behind poleman German Stefan Bradl. In third place was fellow Spaniard, Alvaro Bautista. Marquez had a bad start dropping back to fourth before the hairpin; Jorge Lorenzo went up to third and Valentino Rossi who had a fantastic start catapulted into second from fourth.

Showing no fear, Marc hunted down Lorenzo and Rossi. Lorenzo was visibly suffering, having had two operations in two weeks to repair his broken collarbone, was just in damage limitation mode. He was easy pickings for Marquez, and then by the fourth lap Marquez was able to get past Rossi at the famous corkscrew—that sweeping left-right downhill corner which is a favorite overtaking spot of most riders.

Marquez kept the pressure on Stefan Bradl, hounding him, until, finally with 13 laps to go, he took the lead from Bradl and never looked back.

Marquez is now the youngest back-to-back winner in MotoGP. He leads the championship going into the summer break with a 16-point margin over his teammate Dani Pedrosa, who rode exceptionally well despite having a slight fracture in his shoulder. Jorge Lorenzo is third, 26 points adrift, while Valentino is 46 points back in fourth place.

The next race is the Red Bull Indianapolis Grand Prix in mid August.

Will Marc Marquez be able to keep his lead or will his rivals have something prepared to stop him from getting his third win in a row?
