After being hounded by controversy and likely vehicle envy, President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III has sold his Porsche.
Reports quote Aquino as saying, “(it is) putting unnecessary risk to the people who are guarding me, the Presidential Security Group.” The car does indeed pose a challenge for the PSG’s lumbering SUVs to chase after.
He sold the sports car, reportedly a 2007 911, for the same price that he bought it for, P4.5 million. The car was described then as “third-hand” already. Although he used “personal funds” for the purchase in January, it immediately drew criticism from those who said that the President should not indulge in such a luxury when so many Filipinos are poor. These are probably the same people who have ill-gotten wealth stashed away from public view. For our part, we not only admire the President for making a good purchase with his own money, we commend being transparent about the whole thing. It’s just too bad that hypocrisy—and safety, apparently—have won the day.
“It’s time to let somebody (else) experience it,” added Aquino. So it’s back to the Lexii and Land Cruisers, then, at least for now.
