After its recent facelift, the C-Class gains a new family member: the C-Class coupe. This is Mercedes’ first foray into the compact coupe market, the hatchback (current CLC) and near-midsize CLK.
To give the required sportier appearance, the profile has been lowered by 41mm, with a steeply-raked windshield and stretched-out roof, long hood and short trunklid section. Mercedes uses a narrow C-pillar to give a larger greenhouse. A nice touch is the blacked-out roof if equipped with the twin moonroofs.
The coupe carries four full-sized seats, possibly less of a pain to get into than the CLC’s. As expected, premium materials are used for the dash and instrument panel. The brand’s three-spoke steering wheel with chromed center spoke makes its way here.
Engine choices will be a 1.8-liter gasoline inline-four with either a paltry 115 bhp or a barely adequate 150, or a 2.2-liter diesel with either 125 or 150 bhp. There’s the attractive 3.5 V6 with 225 bhp. The slowest 0-100km/h is 9.0 seconds for the 1.8 gasoline, with a decent 6 seconds for the V6. Transmissions will be a six-speed manual or the 7-Gtronic automatic.
Suspension will be via McPherson struts up front and multi-link independent links at the rear. Sport suspension and a full AMG sports package willb e available.
The C Coupe will officially debut in Geneva in March, while the market launch will be in June 2011.
