VW’s up! (yes, it comes with an exclamation point) is a return to the brand’s roots as a maker of affordable cars—it’s in the company’s name, after all. The up! has a 3.54 meter x 1.64 meter footprint, which should make it a cinch to drive in crowded cities.
up! will be powered by three-cylinder gasoline engines, in 59 bhp and 74 bhp variants. The 59 bhp version with engine start/stop feature is quoted at 23.80 km/liter. An electric-drive up! will also be in the works.
Options such as City Emergency Braking, similar to Volvo’s City Safety, can brake the car automatically using laser sensors as the lookout, and a customized navigation system, make the car more interesting.
The car will officially debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show and will be sold in Europe in December. If the long-rumored VW launch takes place in the Philippines, the car will be up against the likes of the (also upcoming) Honda Brio, Toyota Etios, and (current) Suzuki Celerio.
