Toyota USA has launched the seventh generation Camry, its best-selling model in the USA and America’s best-selling car for the past nine years. The Camry’s styling follows that of its most recent Corolla, only blown up to midsize proportions.
Toyota promises a more spacious interior, improved handling, and quieter ride. Engines are a 2.5-liter four-cylinder with 178 bhp and 230 Nm, and the familiar 3.5-liter V6 with 268 bhp and 335 Nm. Both engines use dual VVT-i variable valve timing technology. Six-speed automatic gearbox with manual shift mode is standard on the higher trim levels. The gearbox features faster kickdown, while the Camry SE features paddle shifters that can override shifting even when in Drive.
There’s also the Camry Hybrid, featuring a 2.5-liter four-cylinder Atkinson cycle engine (which delays intake valve closing to improve efficiency) combined with an with electric motor. Fuel mileage is 18.3 km/liter in the EPA City mode. Combined output is 200 bhp. The hybrid is no slouch, with a 7.6-second 0-96 km/h acceleration time.
The interior also seems to mark a big improvement over the current model, with reportedly better materials and construction. Real stitching, soft padding, and aluminum and chrome trim help make the cabin look more upscale. The entertainment system allows playback of audio and video from an iPod or similar device.
New Camry rides on McPherson struts up front and dual-link struts at the rear. Safety systems include vehicle stability control, traction control, and ABS brakes.
Expect the new Camry to roll into the Asian region later this year.
