Mercedes-Benz has announced the new B-Class hatchback, a new version of what has become its entry-level offering in many countries, including the Philippines. Mercedes promises a more agile driving experience, as well as more efficient powertrains.
The major change is in the car’s drivetrains. Mercedes’ direct injection gasoline technology makes its way to the four-cylinder class, with the B 180’s 1.6 liter turbo engine good for 122 bhp and 200 Nm. The B 200, also displacing 1.6 liters, delivers 156 bhp and 250 Nm. A 1.8 diesel, the first diesel mounted transversely in a Mercedes car, generates 109 bhp and 250 Nm for the B180 CDI; and 136 bhp and 300 Nm for the B 200 CDI. Gearbox choices are the 7G-DCT dual clutch transmission and a six-speed manual with “extremely easy gear shifting.”
Outside, the car sports a more dynamic design compared to the previous straightforward one-box motif. Pronounced wheel arches and sculpted sides help make the car look more dynamic. The complex headlamp design that is becoming the brand’s trademark styling cue also grace the new car. A 0.26 drag coefficient contributes to the fuel efficiency. The B-Class clocks in at 4359mm length and 1786mm wide.
The cockpit features upgraded materials, including synthetic leather for the dashboard. The video screen is designed to hover over the air vents. As the car sits lower to the ground. Seat height has been lowered also to maintain interior space.
The B-Class will have a radar-equipped collision warning system as well as ESP and the Pre-safe preventive occupant safety system.
With the B-Class’ sandwich floor construction, expect that the car will be offered with alternative propulsion (electric, fuel cell) in the future.
