Japan carmakers stop production after quake

March 15,2011

Carmakers in Japan halted production following the magnitude-9 earthquake and tsunami which devastated areas in the country’s north. Toyota, Honda, Nissan, and Mazda have all announced work stoppages as they assess damage and take a headcount of employees since the disaster. Bloomberg reports that Toyota’s production loss may amount to more than 40,000 vehicles as the company’s plants remain closed. The company’s profit will be cut by $72 million for each day of lost operations, while Nissan and Honda will reportedly lose more than $24 million a day.

The companies are nevertheless helping in the relief effort. Honda Motors has donated 300 million yen (about $3.7 million) towards the recovery effort, as well as 1000 gasoline and gas-powered generators.
