Sturdier cars help reduce road injuries

Road injury has climbed as a leading cause of death, according to a report by the World Health Organization (WHO). The WHO has reported that road traffic injuries claimed nearly 3500 lives each day in 2011, the latest year in their report, about 700 more than in the year 2000. This moves road injury up two notches, surpassing prematurity and tuberculosis. Ischaemic heart disease, stroke, and lower respiratory infections remain the top three causes of death.

Unfortunately, developing countries are high on the list of road injuries. According to the World Life Expectancy website, the Philippines is on the low on the list, at 10.6 deaths per 10,000 persons (at least in reported cases). That’s nearly double that of Germany, at 5.7 deaths, but well below Namibia’s 53.4, or even Thailand’s 42.9 deaths.
