Sebastian Vettel’s Advanced Bonus: One-off Infiniti FX

September 22,2011

Sebastian Vettel may wrap up the 2011 Formula One Drivers World Championship this weekend in Singapore, an indication of his dominance of the season that will see three more races after Singapore. He already received a bonus of sorts from Nissan/Renault CEO Carlos Ghosn and Infiniti Chief Creative Officer (aka styling chief) Shiro Nakamura, in the form of a special-edition FX crossover. The Red Bull F1 racing car carries Infiniti badging for its Renault engines.

The FX crossover’s 5.0-liter V8 engine was massaged via exhaust and ECU reprogramming to produce 415 bhp, good for a 300 km/h top speed. 0-100 km/h zips by in 5.6 seconds. The car’s weight has been reduced, ride height lowered, and suspension stiffened.

Says Sebastian: “Driving at high speed where safe and legal is part of my life. This is the first road car I have helped develop. Usually I have hundreds of engineers building one car just for me. So it is fantastic for me to contribute to the design of a car. The result is an Infiniti I am very proud to have my name on. It is all I hoped for: 300km/h, plenty of downforce – and I can still fit my mountain bike in the back. Plus it is totally exclusive – and as an Infiniti driver, that’s important.”

The FX Sebastian Vettel gets carbon fiber for the splitter, sills, front grille, mirror covers, and rear diffuser. It also gets bespoke “shadow chrome” and carbon detailing for the interior.

Now what does Mark Webber get—a mountain bike?
