The Mini family has spawned another baby: this time, it’s the Mini coupe, the fifth in the brand’s expanding model lineup (after the hatchback, convertible, Clubman, and Countryman).
Mini Coupe promises to be even more about driving excitement, being tuned more for a more dynamic performance. Mini cites the John Cooper Works Coupe as the fastest (240 km/h) and quickest (6.4 seconds 0-100 km/h) stock Mini yet.
To our eyes, this is the best looking Mini yet, with a sportier stance, and less of that hairdresser vibe.
The car of course removes the hatchback that has been on every Mini until now, and replaces it with a trunk. It’s 29mm lower than the hatchback, although there are recesses in the headliner to maintain the vehicle’s headroom. The A-pillars are raked backwards by 13˚ compared to the hatchback, and the roof follows a “helmet design.” There’s an integrated spoiler at the rear of the roof, and an active spoiler that pops out from the trunklid at 80 km/h.
Inside, it’s still retro as usual, with the large central speedometer and chrome-tipped toggle switches that are the trademark of the brand. This Mini is strictly for two, with a small 280-liter luggage area taking the place of the rear seats—big enough for your Hermes laptop case.
Powering Mini Coupe is a choice of engines from BMW, ranging from 122 bhp in the Cooper to 184 bhp in the Cooper S, and 211 bhp in the John Cooper Works, all gasoline units. There’s also diesel that’s good for a decent 143 bhp. Transmissions are all six speed: manual or automatic, with paddle shift override.
Mini Coupe rides on MacPherson struts up front and a multi-link axle at the rear. Weight distribution is slightly more to the front than the hatchback, which according to Mini helps the traction, with all the torque being fed to the front wheels. There’s a John Cooper Works suspension package that drops the ride height and equips ultra-firm dampers.
