BMW unleashes all-new 560 bhp M5

November 22,2011

The BMW M5 is one of a handful of sedans that can make your pulse quicken as much as a Ferrari. And that’s just while you’re watching Ronin. Drive one and you will always remember it.
Now, BMW has launched the fifth-generation M5, once again redefining the ultimate sports sedan.

This will be the first M5 powered by a turbocharged engine, a 4.4-liter powerhouse good for 560 bhp and 680 Nm. It’s good for a 0-100km/h time of (appropriately) 4.4 seconds. Peak power is available from 5750 to the 7000 rpm redline, and peak torque is on tap from just 1500 rpm. Top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h; if derestricted, it can surely top 300 km/h. The M powerplant features twin-scroll turbochargers, direct fuel injection, valvetronic variable valve control, and cross-bank exhaust manifold. The twin turbos are mounted within the V8’s 90-degree V angle, making it compact and quick to reach operating temperature. Not to mention a reportedly killer soundtrack.

The car seems to have regained its sleeper-supercar exterior vibe. The M5 is appropriately understated, with its hunkered-down stance. The enormous wheels and quad exhaust pipes are the clearest indication of its capabilities.

The interior features a no-nonsense cockpit, adorned with leather trimmed M Sports seats, and the distinctive shifter for the dual-clutch transmission. Manual and fully automated shifting is selectable. Lest memories of the previous crankiness of the previous transmission in low-speed traffic surface, the new M5 now has a crawl function to make smooth progress in heavy traffic easier. On the flipside, by pressing the Dynamic Stability Control off button, the driver activates M Dynamic Mode, letting the car’s on a longer leash from the electronic assist, or even shutting them off completely.

Of course, the M5 is happiest on open, twisty roads, and here the multi-plate limited slip differential and high-speed data transfer to the stability-control computer helps keep the car pointed where you intend. The dampers are electronically controlled, with settings from Comfort to Sport Plus. Six-pot brakes within the 19-inch forged alloy wheels take care of the stopping duties. 265/40 R19s are at the front, with 295/35 R19s at the rear.
