The Giant of Le Mans returns, as Porsche has announced that they will join the famous 24-race once again. A new sports car prototype will be developed for the 2014 race. The German marque will compete in the top LMP1 category.
Porsche already has the record as the most successful manufacturer at Le Mans, with 16 victories. The first overall victory was in 1970 with the legendary 917 short-tail. The most recent was in 1998 with the 911 GT1, piloted by Laurent Aiello, Stéphane Ortelli and Allan McNish. Lately, Porsche has been campaigning with its RS Spyder sports prototype in the LMP2 category. The RS Spyder won in 2008 and 2009.
Sister brand Audi has used its TDI diesel technology to great success. Porsche’s car may carry a hybrid drivetrain, as first seen in its 911 GT3 R Hybrid racer.
This should be cause for celebration from Philippine distributor PGA Cars, as it carries both Le Mans powerhouses, Porsche and Audi. Time to dust off your “Le Mans” DVD, then.
