Mission: Impossible’s Ethan Hunt is back. And his new car is…?

July 02,2011

Having lost the 007 account and with Austin Powers unlikely to return anytime soon, BMW had to find another superspy to drive its cars. And it has: Tom Cruise’s Ethan Hunt, protagonist of “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol.” The fourth in the series, “MI: Ghost Protocol” will be released in December 2011.

Tom Cruise will be using not a production car but rather the BMW Vision EfficientDynamics concept car, an electric concept that was unveiled at Frankfurt Auto Show in 2009. The EfficientDynamics car is anything but discreet, looking exactly like it popped out of a film set—but more like a sci-fi film than a spy thriller. We suppose that being incognito is of little importance to the IMF team. At least the car will be super-silent.

The exotic appearance of the concept is matched by its high-tech powertrain. The concept is a plug-in hybrid. It uses a three-cylinder common-rail turbodiesel coupled with electric motors on each axle. Lithium-polymer batteries, already in use in the Hyundai Sonata Hybrid and Kia Optima Hybrid, provides storage. The car aims to combine high performance and low emissions, and will part of gaggle of low or zero-emissions supercars in the next few years. The EfficientDynamics car will mutate into the BMW i8, the first in an entire lineup of BMW electric vehicles. Mercedes’ SLS E-Cell and Jaguar’s CX-75 will be its chief rivals.

Says Ian Robertson, BMW AG Board Member for Sales and Marketing: “With its futuristic design and large glass surfaces, the car offers a fascinating perspective on the future of sheer driving pleasure – in combination with maximum efficiency. Also with BMW ConnectedDrive technology, it is the perfect car for Ethan Hunt to outsmart his pursuers through narrow streets and busy city traffic.”

The movie is produced by Mr. Cruise and JJ Abrams, and is directed by Brad Bird (The Incredibles).
