Going sideways with Lateral Drfit Championship Series

By William Herrera August 30,2013

“Drifters do it sideways” – that is the unofficial motto of drifters worldwide, and in Manila no name is closely linked to the drift scene than that of Lateral Drift Productions.

Back in 2006, acclaimed drivers Charlie Cruz and Ramon Rayos got together to create Lateral Drift Productions, they went on to stage the first drift event in the Philippines at the Clark International Expo parking lot, and with Ronnie Trinidad, TV producer and Director joining them in 2009, the drift scene took off and never looked back!.

For 2013 they are staging the “The Hyundai Lateral Drift Championship Series, powered by the Hyundai Genesis Coupe”. The championship is composed of six rounds, kicking off this weekend at the Mega Tent Events Venue in Libis QC.

The 2013 series is made possible by Hyundai Asia Resource Inc. (HARI); the country’s third top ranking automobile brand was tapped to be the title sponsor. HARI’s involvement could be linked to the popularity of their Genesis Coupe, a favourite among new car buyers and drifters alike, and, Standard Insurance Co. one of the leaders in non-life insurance coverage, is the co-presenter for all six rounds of the championship.

Participants for this year’s championship include 6 time defending champion Alex Perez, Audel Sison, David Feliciano, celebrity Ryan Agoncillio and Pilipinas Got Talent (PGT) finalists’ Gio Rodgriuez and Ralph Tan. A motorcycle stunt team will be featured during halftime, and, prizes from the event sponsors, Dickies Clothing and Aguila Glass will be given away. Attendees can also get the chance to go for a drift ride with PGT4 finalists Ralph and Gio on board their 2013 Hyundai Genesis Coupe.

Lateral Drift Productions will be bringing in renowned Japanese drift couple Hiromi Obata and Hiromi Kajikuma to be the judges  for the competition on  Aug 31 – Sept 1, 2013.

Gates open to the public at 9am for the practice runs and the competition proper begins with qualifying for both amateurs and pro division by 1pm. Admission is to this all day event is free.

For additional information, check out the facebook page of Lateral Drift, or just head over to the Mega Tent in Libis. If for some reason you are not sure of the place, just follow the smoke and tire squeals in the Libis area, and you will find yourself right smack in the middle of all the action that only drifting can provide.
