Who ‘ghost’ there? Spooky driving stories for Halloween
Halloween is fast approaching, and like a ghost that a driver may see reflected in the rearview mirror of the car he’s driving, this day could promise some eerie stories.
Whether it’s seeing a ghost while driving the car, or the car breaking down while driving to the cemetery, the best recourse is to stay calm.
If you had an encounter with a ghost, you’ll definitely have a story to tell—a mind-boggling one, of course.
In the meantime, here are three road trip ghost stories retold to this writer, something to fire up the imagination while heading to the cemetery.
Bus stop girl
A man was driving late at night on All Saints’ Day to visit his deceased father’s grave in the province. Along the way, he saw a young lady at a bus stop so he stopped his car and offered a ride since it was already late and there are no more buses passing by.
Because it was raining, the man offered the girl his jacket; she said her name was Ghirly Corpus. An hour later, they arrived at her house and he escorted her to the front door where they said their goodbyes.
The next day, the man remembered that Ghirly still had his jacket. He drove to her house, knocked on the door, and was answered by an old woman. He told the lady about the car ride and the jacket he offered Ghirly. The old woman looked bewildered.
The man then saw Ghirly’s picture on the wall, and identified her as the woman who rode with him in his car. The old lady started to cry and said her daughter Ghirly passed away many years ago on the eve of All Saint’s Day. The woman added that her daughter was buried in the cemetery just an hour away from her house.
The man went to the cemetery and saw his jacket neatly folded on top of a grave; the name on the tombstone: Ghirly Corpus.
Shadow behind you
There was a man who was driving home from a late night Halloween party held at a remote place. Passing on a dark road, he noticed in his rearview mirror that the car behind him was flashing its headlights and honking its horn.
He thought the car just wanted to overtake so he slowed down and moved his car slightly to the side of the road. But the car did not pass, and instead continued to flash its headlights and honk its horn.
Thinking the car behind him was attempting a carjacker’s ploy, he continued to drive until he reached a gas station. The car following him, driven by a woman, entered the gas station too.
He then confronted the woman and asked what the problem was. The woman replied there was a lady dressed in black in the backseat of his car with a butcher’s knife aimed at him. The lady in black would crouch and disappear from view whenever her car’s headlights would flash or the horn was honked.
When they checked the backseat of the man’s car, there was no lady dressed in black. They did find a big, shiny butcher’s knife on the car’s floor, though.
Long and winding road
There was a young lady who drove her car to her grandparents’ province for a vacation during the Halloween break. She never reached her grandparent’s house. A day later, the girl’s lifeless body was found inside her car parked in a secluded area a few minutes away from her grandparents’ house.
The car’s fuel gauge was on empty and thousands of kilometers were added to the odometer considering that it was brand new. The girl, who was chubby when alive, was very thin and showed signs of having starved to death. People say the girl was tricked by spirits and ended up wandering and never finding her grandparents’ house.
If you should happen to take a stroll on a dark and isolated road, especially on the eve of All Saint’s Day, you may come across a car with a confused lady driver who will ask for directions to her grandparent’s house. Don’t talk to her or you may lose your way too.
Are you ready for the unexpected? In case your car breaks down, make sure you have things you can use for a quick repair. To be on the safe side, always make sure that your car is in good condition for that long trip.
In case you see a ghost, be comforted that worse things could happen to you if you were accosted by a thief or a murderer.
Last tip: don’t drive like you’ve just seen a ghost.
