Sneak Peek: Brio hatchback boosts Honda lineup

By Jason K. Ang August 13,2014

BETTER LATE THAN NEVER Three years after its launch in the other regional markets, the Brio arrives to add to the growing list of small cars.

Are you ready for a new small Honda? The Brio follows the wheel tracks of the original Jazz.

What is it: Honda’s new entry-level hatchback. As the City and Jazz sport larger dimensions than the previous generations, Honda needs a small car to fill the gap. This is where the Brio slots in. The Philippines is late to the party, as the Brio was launched in other Southeast Asian markets in 2011.

Design: Within the Brio’s highly compact 3610-millimeter length x 1680-mm width is a relatively long 2345-mm wheelbase. This allows Honda to fulfill its “man maximum, machine minimum” concept. Its exterior has interesting flourishes, like pronounced creases in the doors and a sharply truncated rear. The one-piece glass hatch is its most distinctive feature.

The cabin looks airy, with a reportedly airy and cheerful layout of the main controls. In the Jazz City style, a large touchscreen is at the center of the instrument panel. Internet connectivity via in-car WiFi is expected to be available. The rear seat folds down to increase luggage space.

Engine and transmission: Honda Brio runs with a 1.2-liter SOHC four-cylinder engine with iVTEC variable valve timing. The engine produces 88ps and 109 Newton-meters, probably adequate for the car’s sub-960-kilogram curb weight.

UPDATE: Honda will launch the Brio with a 1.3-liter four-cylinder iVTEC, good for 100ps and 127Nm. Transmission will be 5-speed MT or 5-speed AT

Suspension: Brio uses MacPherson struts up front with a torsion beam rear to keep costs down and to allow for a lower luggage floor. Fourteen-inch wheels with 175-mm section tires are expected to be standard.

Built in: Thailand, the factory floor for many Japanese cars sold in Asean. Interestingly, the Brio has a sedan variant called the Amaze, and will also spawn an MPV version.
