Sneak peek: All-new Hyundai Sonata to launch next week

By Jason K. Ang December 09,2014

Sonata_Exterior_2What is it: Hyundai’s all-new offering in the midsize premium sector. Only this Sonata gains enough interior space for it to be classified as a large car by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The new Sonata gains 35mm length and is 30mm wider than the outgoing model. Wheelbase and height are both up by 10mm, with the added dimensions translating to a roomier cabin.

Looks: Hyundai tones down some of the wilder curves of its design language. With Fluidic Sculpture 2.0, the lines are simpler, while still retaining sporty touches such as the roofline that is similar to those on great-looking sedans like the VW Passat CC and the Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class. Hyundai says that the lowered hood tip and flat underbody reduce wind drag and helps make the car more stable and fuel-efficient. 18-inch alloy wheels are standard.

Sonata_InteriorInterior: Hyundai designed a T-shaped instrument panel, with the audio mounted high on the center portion, with the airconditioning controls located lower. The driver’s seat reportedly has firm support areas at the back and bum, while the side supports are more prominent for better support. The steering wheel design alone took 16 months, with the resulting wheel optimized for grip and comfort. It features variable rim thickness and larger thumb rests. Audio and cruise control functions are integrated into the wheel.

Engine: Sonata will run a 2.4-liter inline-four engine with 178ps and 228 Nm. The engine is equipped with continuous variable valve timing and will be mated to a six-speed automatic transmission.

Chassis: Sonata rides on MacPherson struts up front, and lowered dual multi-link suspension at the rear. Hill start assist holds the car in place to prevent rolling back on an incline. Noise, vibration and harshness are reduced via improved interior acoustics and body structure.

Sonata_Exterior_1Features: The cabin has a panoramic sunroof. Smart key is enhanced with Smart Trunk feature. Just stand near the trunk with the key in pocket for three seconds, and the lid automatically opens—no need for foot waving as in the Ford Escape.

Blind spot detection system uses sonar to alert the driver to vehicles trailing behind in the blind spot. Parking sensors and rear view camera with 110-mm display help with parking. Sonata features front, side and curtain airbags.

The Sonata will come in Ice White, Polished Metal, Phantom Black, and Aquamarine.
