fernando-alonsoFormula One driver Fernando Alonso was taken to hospital after a severe crash in his McLaren-Honda race car. Alonso was reportedly conscious and talking after the accident. The two-time F1 world champion rejoined the McLaren team for this season, in the hope that the new partnership between the constructor and returning engine supplier Honda will give him an advantage. Early testing for the Woking-based team has been plagued by reliability issues. McLaren is one of the sport’s most successful teams, winning more grand prix than any other marque. Honda, as engine supplier, powered six consecutive constructor world championships, four of them with McLaren.

McLaren-Honda issued a statement: “Today at 12:35 CET, while testing at the Circuit de Catalunya (Barcelona), during the fourth and final day of the current test, Fernando Alonso’s McLaren-Honda car left the track at Turn Three, causing the right-hand side of his car to strike the wall.

Fernando was driven to the circuit’s Medical Centre where the circuit’s doctors gave him first aid.

He was conscious and spoke with the doctors.

However, as per usual procedure in such circumstances, he was then airlifted to hospital where he is undergoing precautionary checks.”
