Korean auto brand Ssangyong has announced its return to the Philippine market, under Malaysian-owned Berjaya Group. The brand is set to officially launch its Korando and Tivoli SUVs and Rodius MPV in the next few weeks. The new distributor Ssangyong Berjaya Motor Philippines has announced that Francis Lee, an Executive Director of Berjaya Group of Companies, as its new chairman. David Macasadia is the Managing Director. Mr. Macasadia has close to 25 years of experience in vehicle sales and operations.
Ssangyong Motor has previously sold its MPVs and SUVs in the Philippines. The brand gained a reputation for its quirky styling and Mercedes-sourced diesel engines. The new cars feature more attractive, if more conventional, styling, and a new range of diesel engines. These will reportedly feature world-class common-rail diesel engines that of course meet the required Euro 4 emissions standard.
South Korea’s fourth largest automobile manufacturer, with over 60 years of manufacturing experience. The brand started off making jeeps for the US army, as well as trucks and buses. India’s Mahindra & Mahindra Limited acquired 70% of the company in 2011.
Berjaya Group is the Philippine distributor of Mazda automobiles in the Philippines.
