MAZDA Motor Corporation confirmed that production of its popular Mazda3 compact sedan and hatchback has hit the 5 million mark at the end of April 2016. This significant milestone was achieved only 12 years and 10 months after the start of production of the first generation Mazda 3 in mid-2003.
The Mazda3 is the only the second nameplate in Mazda’s lineup that has reached the 5 million unit production mark. The only other model to achieve this feat was the Mazda 3’s predecessor, the Mazda Familia, also known as the 323, which had a 40-year production run from 1963 to 2003.
“It is truly remarkable how well received and appreciated the Mazda3 has been over the years,” shares David Asuncion, Sales and Marketing general manager of Mazda Philippines.
He adds, “From the very first generation up to today’s Kodo: Soul of Motion-inspired design, the Mazda 3 has tugged at the consumers’ heartstrings with its captivating, dynamic and impassioned design. And with the Mazda 3’s SkyActiv engine, transmission, chassis, and suspension technologies, it lives up to its reputation as one of the best cars to drive and own.”
The current generation Mazda 3 was launched globally as a five-door hatchback and as a four-door sedan in 2013. From 2014 to 2015, it became Mazda’s cumulative bestseller accounting for about a third of the Hiroshima-based company’s global sales numbers.
“The global demand for the Mazda 3 is astounding,” added Asuncion. “Even in the Philippine market, where we source our units from the Hofu plant in Japan, we are still trying our best to keep up with the strong demand for the Mazda 3.”
The Mazda3 was named a finalist in the World Car of the Year and World Design Car of the Year in 2014. The same Japanese hatchback was also named Canadian Car of the Year’s Best New Small Car in 2013, as well as receiving the prestigious Red Dot Design Award in 2014.
The demand for Mazda3 vehicles has exponentially grown since its launch in 2014. It enjoys a solid #2 position on the compact car segment after Toyota Altis, with Mazda3’s share as high as 23.8 percent in some months when supply is adequate.
Customers love the quality, craftsmanship and design of the Mazda3 SkyActiv, plus the power and performance and fuel economy from its SkyActiv technology.
With its rigid yet lightweight architecture, the Mazda3 has achieved a five-star Euro NCAP crash safety rating, the highest possible rating in Europe. Along with the highly efficient and lively 1.5-liter and 2.0-liter SkyActiv-G gasoline engine and six-speed automatic transmission, the Mazda 3 continues to provide outstanding performance and superb fuel economy.
