Did you notice something different this month in our issue of motioncars.com? Oh, it’s not the lay-out…it’s not the writers either. What could it be? Well, in case you have forgotten, let me jog your memory. This month is May, and here at motioncars.com it has been a tradition for the past two years that we always put the Philippines’ premiere automotive show, the TransSport Show into the limelight. However, this year, we decided to heed the call of tradition and instead relegate the whole TransSport Show thingy into a smaller article.
Why is that you may ask…this is our version of the Tokyo Motor Show or the Geneva Motor Show or even the Detroit Motor Show…why can’t put it on a pedestal and worship the upcoming cars featured there? Simply because there is nothing to raise on a pedestal (unless you want to put three year-old buffed-up Civics on an altar) and there’s nothing to worship either. This year’s TransSport Show wants to focus on the retro design of automobiles. Surely enough, there are some great classic sports cars present such as a couple of Mini Coopers, Beetles, MGs, BMWs, Mercedes-Benzes and so forth. But they comprise less than 20 percent of the total show. The rest of the show floor was dedicated to Accords, Civics, CRVs, Corollas, Galants and those that still can’t be called classic as of yet.
Funny thing is their adverts contain a photo of perhaps one of the best-looking and most technologically advanced classic car there is—the Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing Lightweight, but there was no 300SL during the event itself! Hmm…perhaps they hid it in some nook and cranny—but I paid PHP50 (US$1) to enter this show and what do I get? A big, walking advertisement for car tuners, painters, audio upgrades and stuff like that. Is this a show for those who want to tune their cars? Or is this our premiere car show? If it’s the latter, then I have to say that definitely our country is headed for the crapper when the automotive industry is concerned. See for yourself…
