Hot hatch fans are in for a treat in 2017. Hot on the wheels of the Honda Civic Type R comes Volkswagen’s entry, the Golf R. VW Philippines has quietly introduced the Golf R to the market, initially bringing in eight units. The eight were quickly snapped up by car enthusiasts at various Ayala corporation posts at a cool P2.8 million each.
For that price, they get the ultimate-performance variant of the Golf. There’s 310ps and 400 Nm of torque from the 2.0-liter turbocharged gasoline engine, up 80ps and 50Nm from the already spirited Golf GTI. This propels the Golf R to 100kph in just 4.6 seconds. Torque is managed by VW’s 4motion all-wheel drive technology, and is channeled through a six-speed DSG dual clutch gearbox.
Standard equipment includes 18-inch alloy wheels, upgraded disc brakes with R-badged calipers up front, black radiator grille, LED headlamps and daytime running lights. Inside, you get front buckets in fabric and Alcantara with R logo, and stainless steel trim for pedals and footrest.
The Golf R will appeal to those who like their sports cars subtle. Compared to the bewinged Civic Type R and its wild bodywork, the Golf R is Teutonically discreet, with the larger wheels, minor trim changes, and tiny R badge being the only indications of its performance credentials.
The initial allocation is meant to be a test market of sorts, with the Golf R reportedly being available for order with at least a three-month lead time for delivery.
Update: According to VW Philippines, the Golf R is officially not available for order yet.
