2006 MotoGP world champion Nicky Hayden succumbed to injuries he suffered while cycling in Italy this past week.
The Kentucky Kid, as he more popularly known, was one of the most liked riders on the grid. Hayden is best remembered by his rivals as one of the nicest guy you will ever meet on the grid. Former team-mate Valentino Rossi spoke of Hayden as “one of my best friends in racing”
Hayden was regarded as having so much dedication for the sport that even when he won his first and only MotoGP title, Nicky didn’t change, even during testing, he was almost first on the track and the last to leave.
Nicky Hayden, despite being the undergo all season long, won the 2006 title by pipping Valentino Rossi, when the latter crashed in the final laps of the final race, with Nicky crossing the line in 3rd, giving him just enough points to claim the crown over Vale.
Hayden left MotoGP in 2015 and moved over to World Superbike Championships (SBK) with Honda the following year. Nicky last raced in the 2017 Motul Italian Round last May 12-14, just a week before his accident.
Nicky Hayden was 35 years old.
