Titos and Titas of Manila look back at the last 32 years of ph motoring

November 29,2017

We’ve literally come a long way.

When the Philippine Daily Inquirer started back in 1985, cars like the Nissan Stanza, Opel Rekord, Isuzu Gemini and Mitsubishi Lancer ruled the roads.

Prices of diesel and gasoline were no more than P7.

Edsa was unfolding as part of the country’s national fame—not shame as it is with the horrendous daily traffic now.

Back then, a million pesos (that can hardly buy you a good SUV today) was good enough to build you a mansion-like home.

Through the years, Philippine motoring metamorphosed into a billion peso industry, offering Filipinos the mobility that will bring them to destinations as far as their eyes can see.

Driving has become a way of life such that we have learned to adjust to the most punishing traffic situations.

In this issue celebrating the 32 years of the PDI, we look back and trace the memorable moments of the local automotive industry and the cars that spelled the difference.

Here’s what the titos and titas of Manila prepared for you.
