THE 2019 Kia Stinger’s available forward collision-avoidance assist with pedestrian detection system and LED headlights earned a “Superior” rating in tests, earning the model the highest safety rating given by a well-recognized agency.
Naming the Stinger as a Top Safety Pick Plus (TSP+) was the US’s Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, which gave the car’s numerous safety-related features favorable ratings.
Kia explained a vehicle must earn “Good” ratings in six crashworthiness tests to qualify for a 2019 TSP+ award. The tests are for driver-side small overlap front; passenger-side small overlap front; moderate overlap front; side; roof strength; and head restraint. A vehicle must also get an “Advanced” or “Superior” rating for front crash prevention and a “Good” headlight rating.
Kia said the Stinger earned “Good” ratings for all six crashworthiness tests, and a “Superior” rating for the optional front crash prevention system, which helped it avoid collisions in the IIHS’s 19kph and 40kph track tests. The “Good” rating for the headlights applies to the Stinger’s static LED projector lamps.
The Stinger’s performance brings to 10 the number of Kia vehicles with 2019 Top Safety Pick or TSP+ ratings, according to Kia.
Michael Cole, chief operating officer and EVP at Kia Motors America, said “no detail was too small to be obsessed over during the Stinger’s development process.”
Kia noted the Stinger was the first in its lineup to get driver attention warning and lane keeping assist. Driver attention warning helps combat distracted or drowsy driving in certain conditions by monitoring inputs from the vehicle. Lane keeping assist detects and monitors the vehicle’s intended lane and can alert the driver, as well as provide steering input.
