DOTr secretary Arthur Tugade leads the launch of Tsuper Iskolar for Metro Manila PUV stakeholders.

A GOVERNMENT-sponsored scholarship program offered to various transport cooperatives in Metro Manila was launched today in Muntinlupa City by the Department of Transportation (DOTr) and the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA).

Called “Tsuper Iskolar,” the program is meant for drivers, operators and other stakeholders, as well as their relatives and beneficiaries, coming from the 179 transport cooperatives and companies in Metro Manila which are participating in the government’s Public Utility Vehicle Modernization Program (PUVMP).

The agency noted TESDA will provide skills and entrepreneurship training for free. The program will also give trainees food and transportation allowance worth P350 daily for the duration of the 35-day course.

In a speech delivered during the program’s launch held at the Muntinlupa Sports Complex, DOTr secretary Arthur Tugade pointed out Tsuper Iskolar aims to give PUV stakeholders additional training that would allow them employment options.

The DOTr said there are now 5,075 driver scholars nationwide — or a total of around 25,000 including their relatives or other beneficiaries.

It added the Tsuper Iskolar program was formed through an agreement signed on December 11, 2018 between the transport agency and TESDA. It is meant as part of the stakeholder support mechanism component of the PUVMP.

The next Tsuper Iskolar launch is set on July 5 in Cebu.
