PRESIDENT Rodrigo Duterte in his fourth State of the Nation Address delivered on Monday tackled the problem of traffic congestion in Metro Manila and other cities in the Philippines by ordering the suspension of local officials who refuse to clear public roads.
The President issued the order to Interior Secretary Eduardo Año and to the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA).
“Reclaim all public roads that are being used for private ends. Marami diyan (There are plenty of these),” Duterte said.
The President told Año to give a mayor or a governor time to clear public roads, but to also suspend the official if he or she could not comply with the order.
Duterte also said his “request” to the MMDA and to all concerned local officials is to “undertake immediate action to ensure smooth flow of traffic….”
