PROOF of parking will be a requirement when buying a new car.

A law that will realize this is what the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) is asking Congress to pass as part of efforts to ease traffic congestion in some areas of the country. The department has been ordered by President Rodrigo Duterte to clear all roads of obstruction during the chief executive’s recent State of the Nation Address.

A report published today in the Philippine Daily Inquirer quoted DILG spokesman and undersecretary Jonathan Malaya as saying the agency wants a law that will not allow the sale of a vehicle if the buyer cannot prove he or she has a garage.

The Inquirer quoted Malaya as saying the proposed law should also prohibit car owners to buy more vehicles if they won’t have sufficient parking space for additional vehicles.

Senator Sherwin Gatchalian had earlier filed Senate Bill No. 201, or the Proof of Parking Space Act.

Malaya said the DILG will support bills like the one pushed by Gatchalian, according to the Inquirer.
