The BMW 6 Series suffered quite a handicap in its most recent model, featuring a distinctively droopy-looking exterior and a solitary-confinement interior. All that is about to be set right with the new 6 Series, which features a much more attractive exterior.
Now BMW has shown off the 6 Series Convertible, in a move akin to Hollywood greenlighting a sequel even before the first movie hits the screens. The new 6 is more Star Trek than Transformers, so in this case this is a good thing.
Thankfully, the convertible retains the sleek appearance of the coupe. With the top down, the lines are graceful, ending in a large metal cover merging with the trunk. The rear deck looks large enough to host a party on. The top itself features “fins,” supposedly designed to merge well with the new front-slanted “shark nose” of the 6 (and 5 Series). The car’s glass rear window can be lowered separately from the soft top. Lowering the roof is a fully-automatic operation: 19 seconds to lower, 24 seconds to raise.
Continuing the numerical confusion of its new displacement equivalent badging system, the 650i has a 4.4 liter twin-turbo V8 with 407 bhp and 600 Nm. 0-100 km/h is achieved in 5 seconds, on to a governed top speed of 250 km/h. The 640i has a 3.0-liter inline-6 with a single turbo. It packs 320 bhp / 450 Nm, and is just a tick slower at 5.7 seconds to 100 km/h. The eight-speed automatic transmission incorporates a Start/Stop function to cut fuel consumption.
The 650i features space for four lucky bastards, who will sit in the comfort of heat-reflecting leather. The infotainment system incorporates a 12 GB hard disk and Bluetooth connectivity. What’s so special about that, when Mitsubishi Adventures have that feature, you may ask? This one can display email via Bluetooth, and if you’re using a BlackBerry, you can access your email folder via the console controls, and even have your email read aloud to you and everyone else in the cabin. So much for those NSFW messages then.
