If you’ve ever dreamt of driving the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG safety car that pops out every other F1 race to frustrate Fernando Alonso, AMG has something better in mind: why not race one? Mercedes’ racing arm is introducing the SLS AMG GT3, a racetrack model of the sports car with the famous gullwing doors. The car was developed to participate in the FIA’s GT3 class, alongside the likes of the Porsche 997 GT3, Lamborghini Gallardo GT3, and Ferrari F430 Scuderia GT3. GT3 racing allows a relatively less expensive form of racing, as the cars are close to standard production models.
The GT3 will differ from the standard car first of all with its aerodynamics. A new front apron with splitter, central cooling vent on the hood, sideskirts, wider front wing, and a huge rear spoiler. The 6.3-liter V8 will have its output “determined” by the FIA based on “Balance of Performance” principle—the cars should have roughly equal chance of taking a race win. Transmission will be a six-speed sequential racing gearbox. The SLS GT3 will feature adjustable suspension and an airjack system to enable quick tire changes.
The interior incorporates a steel roll cage and seats will have the HANS (head-and-neck restraint) system.
According to Mercedes-Benz motorsport chief Norbert Haug: “The Mercedes SLS AMG GT3…is an exciting and spectacular sports car for dedicated private teams and talented private drivers.”
Interested buyers can call up AMG and be prepared to pony up €334,000 before taxes.
AMG Driving Academy training is optional.
