Small car Renaissance, part 2: Kia Picanto

January 25,2011

Kia has announced the engine range of its new Kia Picanto, set to make its global debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March. Kia promises “large-car” comfort and safety features as well as all-new powertrains with improved fuel economy.

Engine choices will be a 1.0-liter three-cylinder, and a 1.2-liter four-cylinder, with outputs from 68 bhp / 94 Nm, and 84 bhp / 121 Nm, respectively.

While the new Chevrolet Spark is a five-door that looks like a three-door, the Picanto will have an actual three-door model. However, that is unlikely to make it to the miniscule (but growing) Philippine market.

The “large car” features that Kia is talking about include LED daytime running lights (Audi), button-start with smart key (BMW), grip-type outside door handles (Mercedes), and six or seven airbags (Volvo). Some of those will of course be optional extras.
