For those of us who didn’t win the lotto, there’s only one way to collect cars: in miniature. If you’re doing the giving (and not buying a gift for yourself), take note of the preferred scale of your recipient . 1:55 or 1:64 is ideal for having a large lineup of cars on a bookshelf or cubicle, while 1:18 models have doors that open and detailed interiors and engine bays. (Personally, the 1:24 and other scales are in a muddled middle ground that don’t seem to have a clear purpose.) Does he (or she) prefer production cars or modified specials? Cars from the movies, or from a particular brand? A glance at his or her current collection should provide a strong clue.
Check out the Richwell sale, at No. 6 Calle Industria, Libis. They have Disney-Pixar Cars at 20% off, including ones from Mater’s Tall Tales. The perennially unloved Ramone models are available for 50% off or more. There’s also a huge selection of Hotwheels and Matchbox cars.
Lego will have a warehouse sale in Libis this weekend. They have Ferrari and Lamborghini scale cars, including a 1:9 Ferrari F1 racer. Toy Story 3 and Pixar Cars are among the themed sets.
Price range:
Below P100: Matchbox, Hotwheels and Tomica 1:55 cars. Pretty decent and there’s a good selection of European and Japanese models. Visit: Richwell sale, Toys R Us, Toy Kingdom, Rustan’s
P100 to P500: Disney-Pixar Cars, although they have jumped a lot in price from the first generation and seem to be made of lighter and flimsier material (hey, just like real cars!). There’s also the neither-this-nor-that 1:24 scale models from Bburago and Maisto.
Above P1000: Hotwheels Ferrari 1:18 scale models are going for 20% off at the Richwell sale. There’s a good selection of modern (F40) and classic (250 LM) cars at around P3200 each. We found a Testarossa at 50% (without a box, though). Some AutoArt models are the ultimate in detail and paintwork.
Sky’s the limit: AutoArt 1:12 Bugatti Veyron at around P32,000 in Hobbes & Landes.
